The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM)

The idea for the formation of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) was initiated in 1945 and the final shape took place in the year 1947. Over the years, the institute has seen phenomenal growth. The scope of the institute includes activities encompassing the whole gamut of metallurgical processing, research and advancements. This professional body caters to the needs of Metallurgical Engineers and Material Scientists at large who are working in the areas of mineral beneficiation, extraction, fabrication, heat treatment, finishing as well as practical and theoretical aspects of all ferrous and non-ferrous metals and alloys, ceramics, composites and other disciplines. The activities of the institute include organizing national and international conferences and programs, conducting qualifying examinations, publications etc. Starting with a modest membership of 42, the IIM membership now stands at more than 10,000 drawn from various fields of metallurgical activities. The IIM has grown into a reputed institution and is now recognized throughout the world as one of the premier metallurgical organizations.

IIM Jamshedpur Chapter

IIM Jamshedpur Chapter has been actively associated with the development of metallurgical industries and has been organizing technical talks, workshops and conferences at regular intervals on topics of relevance. It does not restrict itself to professionals only but extends its arm to the budding metallurgists who are pursuing their education at college level and the future metallurgists who are in the school. Inter school debate, quiz, paper presentation contest and local industry visit are the regular features of the annual calendar of IIM Jamshedpur chapter.

The IIM Jamshedpur chapter produces a large number of award winners being awarded during NMD celebrations. The chapter has altogether more than 800 members. Some of them are also represented in the national council. The IIM Jamshedpur chapter consecutively has been conferred the best chapter award for its overall performance for the last few years.

IIM Kolkata Chapter

IIM was formed in the year 1946 with Kolkata as head office (HO). Few years later, a separate IIM Kolkata Chapter was founded in 1966. It is one of the oldest chapters of IIM and celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2016. Initially the chapter was operating from rented premises and later shifted to its owned office space in 2004 at Rajdanga, Kolkata.

The IIM Kolkata Chapter is presently having around 500 members from industry, consultant, R&D, academia etc. It organises International / National Seminars on different contemporary topics in addition to conducting workshops and monthly technical talks. Kolkata Chapter has a student wing at Jadavpur University which is also quite active and organises annual conclave and annual quiz competition for school students. The top two teams of the competition are sent to the national IIM quiz contest at Kalpakkam. The chapter took a prominent role in organising NMD celebration and Annual Technical Meeting at Kolkata in 2018. It also organises get-togethers for its members and spouses every year.
